Grinding & Finishing Liquids

Grinding and finishing liquids are the compounds that make mass finishing work: they carry abrasive action, keep parts and media clean, suspend swarf, inhibit corrosion and control foam. Without the right liquid, even the best media gives inconsistent results.

Our range covers aggressive cutting compounds for heavy deburring, mild alkaline cleaners for general finishing, burnishing liquids for bright finishes, and inhibiting compounds that protect steel and cast iron parts from flash rust between finishing and the next process step.

All liquids are water-based, low-foaming and biodegradable, dosed at 0.5–2% of process volume. Tell us your machine, media and parts and we will recommend the compound and dosage for your line.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a grinding liquid used for in mass finishing?

A grinding liquid, also called a finishing or burnishing compound, is added to the water in a vibratory or barrel machine. It cleans the media and parts, keeps the surface from oxidising or rusting, lubricates the media bed and boosts the cutting action of the abrasive, giving a brighter and more consistent result.

How much finishing compound should be dosed?

Dosage is usually a small percentage of the water flow, typically in the range of one to a few percent, and is adjusted to the metal, water hardness and finish target. Too little causes dirty parts and poor brightness; too much produces excessive foam and can inhibit cutting. Matching dose and flow rate gives the most repeatable results.

Do I need a different compound for different metals?

Yes. Mildly alkaline compounds are used for steel and cast iron to give rust protection, while mildly acidic or neutral compounds are used for brass, aluminium and zinc where alkalinity would cause staining. Selecting the compound chemistry for the metal is essential for a bright, stain-free finish.
