Polishing Wax & Buffing Compounds

Polishing waxes and buffing compounds carry the abrasive that gives buffed metal its final lustre. Choosing the right compound for the metal and the buffing wheel is the difference between a hazy finish and a true mirror.

We supply the standard range: brown tripoli for cutting and smoothing on steel and iron, black emery for heavy stock removal, green chrome oxide for mirror finishing stainless steel, white rouge for gold and silver, and blue compounds for plastics and lacquers. All are available in bar form for manual and automatic buffing lines.

Compound selection follows the process: coarse cutting first, then colouring, then finishing. Tell us your metal, current wheel and target finish and we will recommend the compound sequence.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is polishing wax used for?

Polishing wax is a buffing compound applied to a rotating buffing wheel to cut and colour metal surfaces. It produces a high-gloss, mirror-like finish on stainless steel, brass, aluminium and chrome, and it is the final step after grinding and before inspection or plating.

Which polishing wax should I use for stainless steel or aluminium?

Stainless steel and hard alloys need a more aggressive cutting wax, usually an emery or alumina-based bar for the cut stage followed by a finer colouring wax. Softer metals such as aluminium, brass and zinc need a lighter, less aggressive compound to avoid smearing. Matching wax to metal gives a deeper gloss in fewer passes.

Is polishing wax suitable for automated polishing lines?

Yes. Polishing wax is available in solid bars for hand and machine buffing and in liquid form for automated spraying systems. Liquid compounds are often used on automatic polishing lines because they can be dosed precisely and applied uniformly to large buffing wheels.
